Hi Richard,
I tend to give authors a lot of credit for writing and putting themselves out there in the first place. I also note the phrase "as much detail as you can stand" and the reference to the journalist who didn't think time was important in navigation. He was not addressing this group.
Still - I assume the author is an expert. I wish he had mentioned lunars in the history of navigation. I wish he had given Harrison credit for the chronometer. I assume that his reference to a "rock and a rope" refers to a lead and I doubt if that did much good in mid-ocean voyages.
It's a reasonable article and not many people are going to note any errors.
