    I added a small graph with the results of the formulae I presented in 
    NavList 4747. As you can see the length of 1 minute of latitude varies 
    (from 1842.9m on the equator to 1861.6 on the pole). The average of the 
    ten values used to create this graph is 1852.22, which rounded off to 
    whole metres gives us the length of the nautical mile.
    
    On International Hayfor (a=6378388.000, Finv=297.0000000) the average 1 
    arc minute equals 1852.28m.
    
    The international nautical mile is defined as 1 arc minute on a sphere 
    with a 6366707m radius. A little maths tells us that 6366707*PI*2/360/60 
    = 1851.999994m or indeed 1852m as internationally defined.
