Robert, > if you can do lunars > with a box sextant....I am not > even in the same league as you. Of course I CANNOT do Lunars with a box sextant. (You missed the key word "accidentally" in my message. Which means that two or three Lunars with this sextant were accidentally good, one from a boat:-) But of course this is not a sextant for the Lunars, and I do not "do lunars" with it seriously. I find it reasonably good for Sun altitudes. As I said I can achieve a 1' accuracy in good weather with it. It is indeed less convenient than an ordinary sextant but the inconvenience is more than compensated by its convenient size. > I have a hard enough time > nailing them down > with my C.Plath. I would be very interested to see your results. (And of other people who do Lunars too). I do Lunars systematically with my SNO. I mean I use almost every opportunity when the weather and Moon phase permits. And I also have HARD TIMES. I am anxious to try one of those old sextants specially made for the lunars... Unlike you, I like vernier scales. I also normally wear reading glasses (2.7D) (cannot read without them) but I have no difficulty reading the tiny silver scale of my sextant through its own magnifying glass (without eyeglasses).
