I'm new at celestial navigation and after doing some research, I would like to get a plastic sextant, like a Davis Mark 15 or 25, but wanted to see if anyone had a used one they were willing to sell at a break from the new prices ($102/$175). I would also like recommendations for a good book on celestial navigation. I checked "Sky and Sextant" by John Budlong out of the library and liked it a lot. He uses HO 249, and then later has a chapter on using Ho 229 and HO 211. There's a nice discussion on locating major stars, a chapter on emergency procedures, and a chapter on programming calculators. He even includes a perpetual almanac and a complete H.O. 211 in the appendix, so if you lose all but this book, it'll get you by. Unfortunately, it is no longer available, and I can't keep the library copy forever. Can anybody recommend a good book like this on celestial navigation. I have a Celestaire catalog with a listing of what I assume are most of the currently available books on the subject. I would like something with some equations in it. I'm not afraid of sines and cosines. I don't know if it is well known, but I played with a calculator and the HO 211 tables last night and figured out that A = -100,000 log10(sin(R)) and B = -100,000 log10(cos(R)) where R is the angle, so I will write a program to generate my own "211".
