    WW 2 Tamaya

Ebay provided me with an interesting WW 2 Tamaya sextant with a X2 scope. The sextant was offered as is in functional incomplete condition. The price was right so I decided to buy it just to get the X2 scope for my Navy MK 3. The good news is that the scope fits the MK 3 perfectly since both sextants are based on the Plath frame. The better news was that the Tamaya was complete enough to actually take sights after a cleanup and adjustment of mirrors. The sextant was missing index mirror shades which made it necessary to make a Sun observation with the sextant upside down. It worked but was tricky on the arcing. The horizon needs to be at it's high point as the sextant is rocked. Results were within 1 NM making my day.

Dating the Tamaya was lucky too. An internet search showed a similar sextant with a close serial number that was dated 7/9/1944. Since my serial is larger by 180 then it should be safe to say the sextant went into service some time after 7/9/1944 and before 8/1945.
