Greg:
I had thought, perhaps incorrectly, that Navy sextants ala WW2, the Mark 2 had been furnished with a 2 x 20mm scope, lower power, less light gathering ability, which was supposwdly something of a problem. Mwechanically, I believethe Mark 2's were supposaedly quite good.
Re shooting from the beazch v. shooting from a smallish boat at sea, even I have been able to get good sextant shots standing on the beach. I would imagine that shooting from a smallish boat, especially in an "active" sea would be an entirely different story, however my experience with this last has been non-existent. Good luck with your efforts.
Alan
