    Have you also looked at vol. 2 of Chauvenet's "Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy"? He derives most of the math that applies to sextants. Simms is much more detailed, but bear in mind that some of the material on "eccentricity" is not right --not mathematically incorrect but mistaken in its assumptions regarding the nature of the possible manufacturing anomalies of sextants.
