    Ken,

I read the report of William Wales with interest.
    But I am somewhat confused.
What do you think was the purpose of his trip?

The purpose of his trip was to observe the transit of Venus in 1769. He had to go in 1768 because after freeze-up, no ships could get in to Hudson's Bay. The Royal Society sent astronomers to several places around the globe to observe that particular transit in order to accurately measure the distance between the sun and earth. Wales later accompanied Cook on his 2nd circumnavigation as astronomer/navigator. His observations are trustworthy.

    Ken Muldrew.
