I can relate to keeping clear of the boom. Sailing back from an Ensenada race, my crew was my wife and a friend, an experienced woman sailor. I was going forward to drop the sails to go into Dana Point harbor, and when the main boom swung over, I instinctively ducked. But I wasn't ready for it to immediately swing back, and it hit me on the head, knocking me into the cockpit. Needless to say, I was out of action, but Ellen got us into the harbor, and I was soon off to the local hospital to have umpteen stitches in my scalp. So, this one had a happy ending. Had I not ducked the first swing, I would have been knocked overboard, unconscious, and I shudder at that thought.
