The sextant 3 arm fix is accurate, the compass plot with know error is quicker allows for better Navaid selection with a moving ship and has a simular accuracy. For placing a bouy or some act of that kind the sextant is better, but a trained team and ship moving some distance using the bearing is better.
The missle sub can't use either,underwater. I was trained for the sub SINS and was incharge of the navigation team, and made many patrols on the SSBN 602, the accuracy of both sextant and compass plot would be fine, but not needed.
