I realised that there is an easier way of locating an object on the meridian with an altitude greater than 63°. I stood with my feet just on the concrete pad of the carport. I then took half a step back and looked up. There, above the edge of the carport, were

    Jupiter   348°     alt 63.5°

    Saturn  314°      alt 62°

A little trig will tell me where to stand for an altitude of 73°.

The view of the carport edge helped me maintain balance and may block the sun. Now all I need is for the weather to cooperate tomorrow.
