It is a small world out there.

The ex- USNS CHAUVENET was the first vessel I ever served as a licensed officer.  It was at that time called the TS TEXAS CLIPPER II and the year was 1997.  I served as both deck cadet and 3rd assistant engineer.  It was on the bridge of this vessel that my love of Celestial Navigation was born.

The ship was slow, averaging only 10 knots or so and rolled terribly.  I believe we were rolling in the 40 degree range at some points.

As an aside, the archive on the navlist has a scanned copy of my celestial navigation log from my time on this ship, although I don't have the reference on hand since I am at sea and have very limited internet access.

I know for sure that it has been replaced as the Texas A&M training ship, and I suspect has likely been either scrapped or in deep mothballs in the RRF.

    Henry,

At the very end of this post is reference to the USNS Chavenet built in Scotland in 1970. I actually had the honor of serving on this vessel in 1985 when bottom surveys were being performed for the Indonesian government for their uncharted waters. If my memory serves me right there were several blank white spots on the regions charts that were simply marked dangerous waters. One such spot was as big or bigger than Texas. I was told that during WW2 submarines would enter these uncharted waters to hide. Ironically the USNS Chavenet was nearly lost going aground on an uncharted reef. After my service aboard she was sold to the Chilean government and eventually found her way back to the U.S. as a training ship for the Texas Maritime Academy.
