Hobbs is excellent for the beginner, the explanations are easy to understand and there is an available workbook (it comes as a big blue three ring binder).

While they are phasing out signalmen, they aren’t phasing out their skills completely. Quartermasters have always been required to know flashing light and signal flags, now they will be the primary watchstanders responsible for visual signaling as well as navigation. Secure radio comms have largely replaced the need for visual signaling tho. The advantage to visual signaling is that you don’t put out any electronic signals that the enemy can use to determine your location (regardless if they can understand the signals or not) but with today’s satellites and aircraft it is hard to keep your general location a secret for very long anyway.

Good morning all, I used an earlier edition of Hobbs (currently 4th edition on the link below)when I took the course at Penn State from their  Navy ROTC program when I worked there.  The books (2 volumes then) was pretty good, but we were also lucky that the Chief of the command was a Quartermaster ands a real nice guy.  He took my Davis Mark 15 and showed me how to adjust the mirrors.   I was the only non-ROTC student they ever had go through their class.

On another note about phasing things out - I just read on military.com that they are phasing out signalmen.  I guess they are not worried about secure comms from another vessel.

    Andrew,

Most all the texts may be available from this source, and if not they may be able to steer you in the right direction.

This message is primarily addressed to Joel Jacobs.

Is it possible for civilians to obtain copies, even used, of the textbooks that the academy uses in their navigation courses?  I am trying to work through Bowditch and the example navigation problems, and finding it very difficult.  Maybe a different text would help me out.

    Thanks,

    Andrew
