Byron:The Subs back in WW2 needed to get Celo fixes while on the surface only in dark night, with sextants. the techique they used was to use red goggles for about 30 minutes for good night vision, them on the bridge in complete darkness for another 20 minutes, no use of light or binoclars. The observer would use an assitant with a flashlight with a dim red light, and hack watch he also eye night adated. They would stand back to back. The assistant would hand the observer the sextant with close to correct reading for the star, the observer would hold the sextant up-side-down and bring the horizon to the star.
The sextant is reversed and the star is shot. The observer will not look at the horizon may-be 10 to 20 degrees above, this is because of night vision, rod & cones of the eye (night vision never look directly at what you want to see.) before the shot the observer should close the eyes for 5 seconds. The filter may be used to dim the star and enable a better horizon. This is real extrem
but needed then, but think about the above and use some of the ideas.
