Jan, Computer algebra systems such as Mathematica or Maple are very versatile, but expensive. MuPAD is free but I have no experience with it. Maxima is also free but the interface is horrible. For MuPAD visit http://www.sciface.com/products/index.shtml Many other symbolic packages are found at http://horse.mcs.kent.edu/SN/ftpsoftware/ftpsoftware.html Next comes Matlab, basically intended for doing linear algebra, but it can do a whole lot more, though not symbolic, only numerical calculations. I think it comes pretty close to what you are looking for. There is a free clone called Octave, which can run on all Unix-like environments including Solaris and Linux. I don't know if a Windoze-version exists. The following site has a section "Freely Available Packages" which might include something of your liking: http://gams.nist.gov/OtherSources.html See its entries for CMAP and Sicyon, for example. Steven.
