One of my other interests is the history of local land from 1840 when the NZ Company "acquired" the Wellington area [1]. Where I live the land was divided into 100 acre country sections and one acre town sections. Where I live the land was divided into 100 acre sections. Running through the house next door to me is the boundary of an 11 acre section. From information I have I can infer (but not prove) that the section was created as a result of a survey error with chain and compass.
[1] I have put acquired in quotes because how the NZ Company got its hands on the land is a story in itself.
