When you drive north or south in Chicago and you cross North Avenue you make a small jog to the left because you are crossing a township border and the survey must adjust the grid due to the spherical earth and they make these adjustments at the township borders.
I must get this in before the list owner closes the thread down..........
One of my other interests is the history of local land from 1840 when the NZ Company "acquired" the Wellington area . Where I live the land was divided into 100 acre country sections and one acre town sections. Where I live the land was divided into 100 acre sections. Running through the house next door to me is the boundary of an 11 acre section. From information I have I can infer (but not prove) that the section was created as a result of a survey error with chain and compass.
 I have put acquired in quotes because how the NZ Company got its hands on the land is a story in itself.
