About eight hours ago, in the middle of the night local time, the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald was apparently involved in a serious collision with a container ship off Nagoya Japan. This is a very busy port area. From the images, it appears that the Fitzgerald was struck amidships right near the bridge by the container ship's bow. I suppose they're lucky this was a low-speed collision --which I have to believe was the case since otherwise the destroyer would have been cut in two.
I had two young students this Spring in a couple of celestial navigation classes at Mystic Seaport who had served just recently in the Pacific aboard the Fitzgerald. I hope their friends and crewmates are well.
This story has only a minor connection to traditional navigation, but I thought it might be of general interest.
