    Size and energy consumption would rule out the highest accuracy type of mechanical inertial guidance systems used on subs.  MEMS type inertial sensors would be more likely on UUV's, but with reduced accuracy due to drift over long periods of operation.

    DARPA is investigating an acoustic underwater equivalent to GPS.  A constellation of long range transponders deployed on the ocean bottom to provide triangulation similar to GPS satellites.
