It seems much more likely to me that the ship struck on the very outside of the reef. The photos show damage to only the aft section on the port side. That suggest to me that the ship was not on a straight course, but instead executing a steering correction to turn to starboard as they approached the rocks. With a ship that size, a turn to starboard would cause the stern to swing to port.
