carefully clean the arc, very carefully, it is mostly considered very bad to use silver polish... with any abrasive/chemical etching action there, it may damage things, cleaning should be gentle.
I have seen arcs where scale was Partly unusable, one had no scale left at sll, merely a few faint markingsbhere snd there due to polishing, it was a valued heirloom loved to death.
