    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply and the guidance on how to clean the silver scale. By coincidence (and very unusually) I was in Greenwich at the weekend and had an hour in the Maritime Museum to photograph the sextants and octants on display. There was a Joseph Hughes sextant dated 1875 that had a similarly shaped brass casting ( I assume it is a casting) supporting the silvered scale. I will sort out and post some photographs.
