What a spirited reply, Frank. Only a month ago I joined? Amazing. Here's how I figured Babbage Engine complimented Slocum story. Babbage engine was to dispense with humans from beginning to the published end, eliminating the chance for errors. Slocum claims he found one which, in my mind, wouldn't have been there if Babbage actually got his engine built and used in publishing math tables.

The fact that Slocum was NOT a heroic figure, and may have fabricated some of his stories, can be woven into my tale, as much of it has to do with the built-in skepticism of any honest scientific endeavor. And I thank you for adding this dimension to him. It makes for a much richer portrait. Too bad that we can't substantiate his tall tale telling with some documented information. That would really be fun.

All this being said, I'll still love SAAW, as I will idolize Shackleton even though I know he has/had his detractors.
