    Upon reading this topic I did a quick internet search and found a book on the
    subject.  "Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings"  by Dennis Fisher"    1994 at:

      Part history of navigation and part hands-on project book. Includes complete
    history and instruction for making 18 historic navigation tools including
    astrolabe, cross staff, pelorus, traverse board and a vernier sextant.
    Also I found some comments at:

    Voyages of Exploration: Shipbuilding</A>  a small picture here of a traverse
    board and some comments about early navigation.
