I've used it recently to translate a recent paper in French about 18th century instruments. It produced several absurdities, of course, but knowing the subject reasonably well, and having some halting French, I found it made the translation job a lot easier. It did all the spadework, and meant that I didn't have to keep running to a dictionary all the time; just occasionally.. Google claims that it operates differently from other translators; not trying to analyse each sentence into grammatical components, but instead doing the job on a statistical basis using a large database of examples. However it works, it seems to do it pretty well.
