Hi George I have completed the first pass trascription of Worsley's log. Although the log images continue with further dates, Worsley has sighted land (South Georgia Island). Worsley now switches from open ocean navigation to coatal piloting and then, I expect, to the land crossing. As such, I will stop transcription. I will now take on the task of performing each reduction, such that we can catch any of my typographical errors. The quality of the log images, as previously stated, is rather poor. It may be the log itself, or the reproduction, but in any event, I should have enough information to catch obvious errors. For example, if you recall, you caught an error where Worsley does a subtraction and the number I typed was incorrect. We may even be able to re-construct some data this way. I think it critical that I get each digit of every numerical calcuation exactly correct. I will second your motion of NavList 7629, with the request to be able to direct the reader to the corrected value. The process of learning and discovery will often lead to errors. The errors are just as valuable as the true result, in that learning still occurs. However, when we promugate these errors without correction, it can lead to all sorts of bad learning. Wouldn't it be handy for readers of some of these earlier transcriptions, to be directed to the "final one" (which does not yet exist in final proofed typed form)?
