    You remarked: "I also found that swinging an arc to find the correct altitude caused the sextant scope focus ring to move. It helps the sight if the focus remains sharp. It was interesting to note the two large sun spots at the 2 and 7 o’clock (apparent) positions."

    A piece of electricians tape will secure the scope focus. I also use tape to secure infinite focus on my digital camera when imaging celestial bodies. Focusing on a Sun spot is an excellent way to sharpen the field of view.
