    Some years ago I experimented with  used Motor Oil (very black) in a pan as
    an artificial horizon with some success. A little messy perhaps, but quite a
    bit less toxic than mercury (and cheaper). I just leveled the pan and the
    oil surface took care of leveling  itself    :>)
