    Time on iPhones
    From: Lu Abel

Does anyone know how iPhones calculate time?  Since they have continuously-running GPS's, I would have thought they would use GPS time.   But comparing the time on my iPhone with time from my GPS (verified by the time.gov web site) I found my iPhone to be about two or three seconds slow.

I know that phones also need to keep accurate time in order to work properly (your conversation is squeezed into a tiny time-slot in communicating with the cell tower) but that is "system time" which can be off from "real" time.

Surprisingly, my pre-iPhone cell phone running on Verizon Wireless seemed to keep perfect time.   We had a bit of discussion on that on this list several years ago, with other members reporting that the time shown on their Verizon phones (in other locations) sometimes had significant errors.

    Thanks for any insight.

    Lu
