Well, sure. But you try shooting the Sun at any other time from my backyard. :)
I plugged the second observation into the formula:
arccos((sin Ho - sin Dec sin Lat)/(cos Dec cos Lat))
...and (consistent with your analysis) was about 9' of longitude in error. Still, I'd take that over just a DR any day. But what do I know, I'm just a landlubber. Lol.
