Re: Time Sight Problem: Joshua Slocum Lunar

Thanks very much for the clarification. I now understand your question and was confused by the inclusion of talk of a moon altitude sight at the time you gave the GMT measured value. I understand in principle the solution to lunar distance problems.

My intrest in CN is less historical than yours and that is part of the difficulty I had in understanding the question.

My last post indicated, I believe, that the problem could be solved without a lunar distance measurement using only the sun and moon altitude measurements though perhaps not as accurately as the error propagation in the calculations is probably worse than for lunar distance measurements.

In any event thanks very much for the stimulating question and your efforts to help me understand the question.
