It's almost certainly a fair copy that was sent back to the partners of the North West Company. Thompson would have produced it while at a fort (basically a log cabin in the wilderness). The notebook is titled, "Journey to the Kootanaes. Rocky Mountain, October, 1800." For contrast, here is a page from one of Peter Fidler's journals from 1792 (Hudson's Bay Co.
