As a practicing Naval Architect of the old school, one tended to acquire "references". Here's some of mine on the subject;
>>" Greyhounds of the Sea" by Carl Cutler... I have heard it's a bit tedious.
I've read it cover to cover recently. And, I admit thinking not many would. I feel it accomplished what it set out to do. I would be a little kinder, and refer to it as "detailed". I enjoyed it and am glad to have it.
