    Re: Testing SNO after fixing
    From: Fred Hebard

First, I think it's great that Alex is getting observations that are
within 0.1' or 0.2' of arc from his known position, and with similar
    precision.

I got the same numbers as Alex for his first set of observations, but
for the second set, my calculated altitudes were about 6.6' smaller
than the observed altitudes. The Naval Observatory site agreed with
my calculated altitudes, so I don't know where the error lies.

One would think that adjusting the backlash on the sextant wouldn't
have affected the readings as long as one always approached the final
    setting from the same direction.

One psychological explanation may be that Alex finally became
confident enough in his instrument and himself to get good readings.
We do know that it takes a while to become proficient with the
instrument, although this component obviously is difficult or
    impossible to measure.
