Lisa Fiene asked a few questions about the teaching methods or curriculum taught to boater now days. Lisa, Do you want to know what is being taught to recreational blowboaters and stinkpot operators? Or do you want to know what is being taught to REAL professional personnel? The differance between what the two groups are taught is as night is to day.Even the most serious in depth recreational courses don't come close to what is taught, nor the subjects covered as in depth,as is taught to proffesional personnel. This at best can only be considered as "entry level" even after receiving the required passing grades. After the commencement of classes is when the REAL lessons and disciplines are taught in the professional setting. Drills and evolutions, drills and evolutions and then some more drills and evolutions while on shipboard duty on a scheduled, continueing basis so that everything is 2nd nature is where the real lessons of seamanship are learned. How many recreational boaters run drills on a schedule with their crews when they venture into the blue ponds of the world? If one doesn't use what one is taught in class one loses it.Or at least the abitity to accomplish the task correctly and quickly without really thinking about it is eroded to the point of worthlessness.
