Yes Alan,
Some "Authorities" will react differently when you submit to them what initially looks like "strange" published data.
Just to name a recent example :
- About 1 year ago I talked over the phone to an Astronomer (whom I had never met) responsible for the Strasbourg CDS SIMBAD Star Catalog about a possible error in their displayed data. (see : http://www.fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx?i=116535 ). And within 3 days, it was all fully corrected. Meanwhile, Paul Hirose had immediately discovered where their computing error exactly came from, which was further fully confirmed to me through the explanations I subsequently received a few days later from CDS.
- By the same time, I sent to Bureau des Longitudes / IMCEE a note about the (strong) possibility of inconsistent Precession use for data published on their server for remote times. I am not sure that they have looked it up yet ...
