Clearly, Alex and I have differing views about "Taking the Stars" by
Peter Ifland, and he is perfectly entitled to his. As for me, I had
seen it first in a library beforehand, and liked it so much that I
ordered it straightaway, transatlantic shipping cost and all. It's
true, that was more than I usually pay for my books. It is frequently
taken down from my shelves to refer to.With permission of the
Mariner's Museum, who published it, I have used several of its
illustrations as slides, for a recent lecture on historical
It would be interesting to learn, then, whether there are particular
aspects of that book that cause it to fail Alex's value-test.
Prospective purchasers should not be put off by Alex's comments, in my
opinion. Except that I agree with him that it's wise to inspect any
book for yourself before buying, if you can; and not rely entirely on
someone else's opinion. We all differ, thank goodness.
