I swing my sextant 2 ways. The first by swinging my hips side to side to aquire the correct azimuth. Next I rock my sextant around the axis of the scope/horizon mirror to find vertical by rotating my wrists.
I tend to dip the star or limb back and forth across the horizon until it feels right. I've never considered, or worried about, backlash on the micrometer drum. I do the same with Lunars and get small and repeatable errors.
These techniques work quite well for me.
