Byron: Amplitude,It is not only easy, but it is much more accurate.
I have written about this before, When the body, sun is rising, it's
relative movement is almost zero in horizon motion. This gives more
time and care in the shot, besides you are using the instrument that
you use to take bearings with coming in to out of port. I have written
about the Azimuth circle before,it is a very delicate instrument,
I have found many ships after coming out of the Ship Yards with the gyro
set with a faulty Azimuth Circle, including the article that I wrote
about the USS Intrepid. You must use the Azimuth Circle to check the
compass at sea, but use my "Franklin Ploting Technique to set your
gyro any time you can take bearings, including the yards. After all you will be using the same equipment that you safely use to pilot with and your compass
will be accurate, not being set with mirrors, bubbles and a high sun
using the Azimuth Circle.
