    Don and Alex,

Yes indeed: Sherlock Holmes! Of course Conan Doyle added this strange ignorance of basic astronomy to Sherlock to make him seem more alien, more obsessed. Today he might be diagnosed with some degree of autism and perhaps put on meds.

When I was a kid I used to like reading the Ellery Queen mystery novels. They were a little different from most other crime yarns in that at some point near the end of the book there would be a statement saying that you now have all the clues to solve the mystery. Of course even with all the clues, what with the obfuscation and red herrings, I was never able to solve any of them.

I have very vague memories of one of these stories where the solution involved a house that was a duplicate of that where the real crime occurred. However the houses were orientated differently and Queen solved the problem when he observed that the sun was in a different position at the same time of day in the duplicate house than that of a picture taken at the original where the crime occurred - or something along those lines.

Perhaps this is one where Ellery Queen might have been able to trump Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's ace sluth due to Sherlock's lack of astronomical savvy.
