Gary,
Even your example from the Air Force manual shows what I am saying. On page 25 the Graphic Method shows equal space between lines of latitude but then goes onto the Meridional Distance and shows how you can draw the lines of latitude at DIFFERENT spacing.
No one is saying that the different methods will give a plotting chart that does not LOOK like a Mercator just that it is not a Mercator. My wife has nylon hose that look and feel like silk but I would not say she is wearing silk hose. ;-)
