    Found it again. It's on page 205, very  likely the same spot in every edition
    from 1855 through 1880. Before 1855, this  page is mostly blank. Here's what
    seems to have happened: the publishers decided  to insert a section on Sumner,
    but they didn't want to spend much money or get  into much detail on the
    method. So they modified the plate for that single page  inserting the new text in
    the blank area. You can see if you look closely that  it is composed in a
    slightly different font. The article that this new section  is tucked under is
    about determining latitude on land with an artificial  horizon. Obviously
    there's no connection between the text on Sumner's method and  this other article.
    It was simply the most convenient nearly blank page in the  book!
