OK, here is an advertising of the modern maker of inertial navigation
systems for ballistic missile submarines:
http://www.sagem-ds.com/spip.php?rubrique149
(I wonder: is their market so large that they need Internet to advertise
this product ? :-)
It says 1 mile per 24 hours. If this advertisement is genuine,
and if this is the present day state of the art, we can safely assume
that many months voyages without surfacing is an exaggeration
of journalists, Thomas Clancy, and other fiction writers (or of the navy PR
department).
And that for a missile launch with 1 mile accuracy you have to surface
at most 24 hours before you launch. Unless you have a tethered GPS reciever,
which was not available in 1960.
Alex.
