    Re: Starting new threads
    From: George Huxtable

Frank provided timely and useful guidance, on starting new threads.
He wrote- "4) Be aware that people who follow NavList by email usually
experience none of these threading and subject-changing issues that you're
talking about, and they will be scratching their heads over this whole
discussion. .... but most just display them in order received."
That applies to me, and those words helped.
The only point on which I would differ is where Frank writes-
"4) Since most NavList messages sent by email and posted online include
threading reference info, it is not necessary to include a "was" tag in the
subject line. So if you're replying to, e.g., a message with subject "Re:
Plath sextants" and you've decided to start talking about SNO-T sextants,
change the subject to "SNO-T sextants" rather than "SNO-T sextants; was Re:
Plath sextants". ["was" tags were useful a few years back but less so now]"
As one who receives by email, I find it difficult, when looking at old
messages, where a thread has been spawned from a preceding one, to follow
the discussion back to its origins. That's the reason, when introducing a
new threadname, why I usually chuck in a "was: xxxx" , to allow a link
backwards along the chain, for others inquiring later, as it's not otherwise
obvious. Then, for further iterations, I'll usually drop that "was....".
Does that make sense? If it doesn't help, I won't do it.
