I think you are ready to use Pub 249 vol. 1 (selected stars). Enter with Latitude and Local Hour Angle of Aries and the table will give seven selected star altitudes and azimuths. There will be three stars marked with a black diamond that will have optimal azimuths for a fix. For 42 North 70 West the three optimal stars for a 20:40 civil twilight this evening are:
Deneb Hc 41* Zn 061*
Antares Hc 21* Zn 174*
Dubhe Hc 43* Zn 321*
