Marcel, I'm afraid this discussion will soon pass the limit for "on topic". I certainly agree that the interpretation and use of the result may become very difficult if the distribution is "un-normal", but the formal definition of standard deviation is valid for any distribution. But to further elaborate on different estimations for expectation value and variance will definitely be off topic.
Anyway, your explanation on 5 January was excellent.
