Tony, you asked about solving for latitude. It really can't done directly from that equation. There are other ways of generating latitude from known values of HA, dec, and alt. We discussed that months ago. We also discussed the fact that this is completely un-necessary. It simply never comes up in the real world --which is exactly why those "other ways" of doing the math are not commonly known. You don't need it, and no practical navigator needs it.
If you believe that you need this or you believe that there might be a practical use for it, then let's discuss that first --before getting carried away by a minor math problem.
