    The Spirit of this List

Interesting point. I think of the spirit of this list as being
"self-reliant" navigation, that is, navigation without relying upon
man-made services which could fail or be interrupted on a whim of
    government or business.

However, I know that the charter of the list states "without
electronics" or something like that so my always bringing up
calculators and computers may stray from the intent of many. My own
kit of equipment has a very reliable calculator (an HP-48G+) but also
has the most important formulas printed out and a slide rule in case I
need to do it by hand. This gives me both self-reliance and ease of
    use with a non-electronic backup.
