I think of the spirit of this list as being "self-reliant" navigation, that is, navigation without relying upon man-made services which could fail or be interrupted on a whim of government or business. However, I know that the charter of the list states "without electronics" or something like that so my always bringing up calculators and computers may stray from the intent of many. My own kit of equipment has a very reliable calculator (an HP-48G+) but also has the most important formulas printed out and a slide rule in case I need to do it by hand. This gives me both self-reliance and ease of use with a non-electronic backup. Dan
