Alan,
I find that a non abrasive white eraser (same as what I use for erasing 2HB pencil marks on charts) works well for cleaning old dirt and grime off the rule and slide faces. A wood tooth pick does a good job of removing dirt and grime from the slide grooves. Use care on taking apart the curser because the plastic breaks easy. Set the slide rule in the sun light and this will bleach the discoloring some. Restoring the cases are next to impossible. I use black gorilla tape for case repair (tacky but functional ;-).

P.S. K&E 408x rules are sweet. Good choice.

The other day, likely the last one I will buy arrived in the mail, bought via e bay, unless a Bygrave type rule shows up, inexpensively, or I opt for building my own. It's a K & E 4081-3, which appears to be in proper condition. The rule itself is a bit dirty, I suspect that it will clean up. The spring in the cursor is a little stiffer than others I've seen, but no sign of K & E Cursor Rot, and everything seems to align properly. I noticed several other 4081-3's offered, some of the prices striking me as ridiculous, others reasonable. One pays their money and takes their choice. Fascinating things.
