My robotic total station uses the electronic version for aligning the crosshairs on a target. Some older total stations use a mechanical version.

We use these quite often, even though digital versions are cheaper. I post
because of the wonderful ingenuity. Precision down to 0.5 micron (wavelength of
light) can be attained.
