Which limb of the moon is visible depends on the relative positions of the
sun and moon. The moon is lighted by the sun, so the visible, fully rounded
limb of the moon always points to the sun. Those of us who observe lunar
distances for longitude take advantage of this to choose the best star or
planet to measure the moon's distance from, since the moon's orbital motion
is in line with the sun.
